Here’s something I did for Truthdig about why I miss Norman Mailer, whose boorish curiosities and precise tongue and magnificent disdain for the straight line may never come again, much to the detriment of the culture’s intellectual hygiene.
I think his best work was The Executioner’s Song, and I will have to agree with Tom Wolfe and Gore Vidal, Mailer got kind of boring later. I tried to read Harlot’s Ghost….did not get very far.
