It’s an animated comedy show – or it will be, once the right Hollywood weasels get a load of these strips! – for those of us who sometimes feel as if our lives are being manipulated by dull and unimaginative owners – whether we’re talking about bosses, parents, priests or politicians – and that our souls have become quarantined within the confines of an enclosed patch of manicured and cultivated earth that is preventing us from experiencing all the wondrous beauty and thrilling treachery rumored to exist out among the cracked concrete and flashing neon of the real world just beyond the fence encircling us. It is a prison story where the inmates – a disparate group of dog friends and one rat who spend their days (and some nights) in a suburban dog park in Hoboken, New Jersey, called Central Bark – assume their incarceration is unalterable and completely normal. It is The Office meets Animal Farm, Don Hertzfeldt meets Peanuts, South Park meets Looney Tunes. It is a workplace comedy without the workplace, just the office politics where the employees, rather than tediously slogging away in meaningless advance of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, tediously and hilariously slog away in meaningless advance of pet servitude and the meaningless distraction of each other’s enduring company. None of the characters (except for Leslie) have the slightest idea about how to improve the monotony of their captivity, having never even considered life off the leash and away from the pacifying trappings and meager rewards of domestication.
Huck, etc. is about how animal instincts and improvised friendships can disrupt the trajectory of a life pre-scripted by propriety and maintained by the empty expectations of convention. And, yes, there is humping.
