Alas, those Greek originators of democracy were not always quite the models of right conduct we’d like to believe – read Thoukudides’ account of the Athenian attack on Melos and the Athenians’ response to the Melians’ appeal to right and justice : «Right, as the world goes, is only in question between equals in power, while the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must». The only difference between this and the attitude of the US government is that the Athenians, not having the benefit of PR consultants, were quite frank as to how the world works, while Ms «we came, we saw, he died» Clinton mouths platitudes on human rights and democracy, while her government drops the bombs….
