  1. In 1974, National Lampoon released a (vinyl) recording, “The Missing White House Tapes”, satirizing Watergate and Richard Nixon. Its ‘A’ side featured Nixon’s voice (amazingly well-spliced from speeches and press appearances), admitting to everything but sex with animals.

The ‘B’ side were short pieces, made to sound as if someone were surfing through television channels, performed by many of the original SNL cast. It included an “Impeachment Day Parade”, with Chevy Chase as a Parade commentator, who said (slightly paraphrased):

CHASE: [Sound of band in the background, playing the “Marine Corps Hymn”] … And here come our brave POWs, who spent years resisting the efforts of their North Vietnamese captors to convince them that the United States was run by a tiny clique of criminals, bankrolled by Wall Street, and working hand in glove with the CIA in a campaign of terror at home and abroad.

(And that was 1974. We’ve made so much progress since then.)
